Grievance Procedure

DBT WISE is fully committed to conducting all activities in strict conformance with the American Psychological Association’s Sponsor Approval System and Ethical Principles of Psychologists. DBT WISE will comply with all legal and ethical responsibilities to be non-discriminatory in promotional activities, program content and in the treatment of program participants. The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards will be the responsibility of the Director of Education & Training in consultation with the members of the DBT WISE Advisory Board.

While DBT WISE goes to great lengths to assure fair treatment for all participants and attempts to anticipate problems, there will be occasional issues that come to our attention that require intervention and/or action. This procedural description serves as a guideline for handling such grievances.

  1. When a participant, either orally or in written format, files a grievance and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken. If the grievance concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual filing the grievance will be asked to put his/her comments in written format. The Director of Education & Training will then pass on the comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the grieved individual. In cases where The Director of Education & Training is also the speaker the grievance concerns, then the grievance will go to Dr. Lindsey Overstreet, a member of the Advisory Board and she will act in place of The Director of Education & Training.
  2. If the grievance concerns a workshop offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, the Director of Education & Training will mediate and will be the final arbitrator. If the participant requests action, the Director of Education & Training (or if the trainer of the workshop is the Director of Education & Training, then a member of the advisory board, Dr. Lindsey Overstreet,) will:
    a) attempt to move the participant to another workshop or
    b) provide a credit for a subsequent year’s workshop or
    c) provide a partial or full refund of the workshop fee.
Actions 2b and 2c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the grieved individual.
  3. If the grievance concerns DBT WISE CE program, in a specific regard, the Director of Education & Training or a member of the advisory board will attempt to arbitrate. Written complaints or grievances should include: the name, address, and phone number of the person submitting the complaint or grievance; the title of the Continuing Education program; and the exact nature of the complaint or grievance. If the Director of Training is the trainer for the program, then the complaint will go to Dr. Lindsey Overstreet, a member of the Board of Advisors.

  4. If there is a grievance with an instructor who is also involved with CE planning and/or part of the management team, an advisory board member will be used to resolve the participant grievance. In this situation, all actions described that would be taken by the Director of Education & Training will be taken by this advisory board member. Written complaints or grievances should include: the name, address, and phone number of the person submitting the complaint or grievance; the title of the Continuing Education program; and the exact nature of the complaint or grievance.

Confidential records of all grievances, the process of resolving the grievance, and the outcome will be kept in locked files of the Director of Education & Training or in locked files of the Advisory Board. A copy of this Grievance Procedure will be available upon request.

Please contact the Director of Education & Training or Dr. Lindsey Overstreet to submit a complaint or if you have additional questions.
